Summary

 

The purpose of this session is to provide to a group staff within the workplace, an introduction into providing meaningful activities to older people.  

Who this unit is aimed at

 

This unit is relevant to workers who provide advocacy or care to clients in all care settings - hospital, residential, day- or foster-care or in the client’s own home. 

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker must be able to:

 

  • understand from a client focused approach the needs of the specific service users in more detail
  • implement a broader range of activities techniques
  • develop their motivation skills
  • develop a broader knowledge of potential resources
  • work with individuals who have limited abilities

This training is not limited in numbers.

  • Ice Breaker exercise and baseline assessment
  • Preconceptions
  • Empathy exercise - dementia
  • Activity types and their suitability to the service user
  • Utilising life themes and why
  • Reminiscence as an activity
  • Working with variety
  • Making use of props
  • Motivational techniques - making groups happen
  • Developing and maintaining appropriate Resources
  • Recording  and evaluating activities

 

Other relevant information 

1.       For registered nurses who wish to incorporate this training into your PREP portfolio’s, you should carry out practice reflection and attach subsequent evidence from this training  

  1. Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for approximately 3 years
  2. A candidate assessment is available (Word 2000) for post training audit

 

 

Included in the session is theory based information that may involve a powerpoint presentation.

The key points to remember are:

1.   The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.

2.   Staff should not be expected to be on duty

3.   Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.
