Summary

 

The course is designed to provide for care support workers an introduction to the basic skills required when working with clients who are suffering from mental health deficit, in this instance organic dementia's.

Who this unit is aimed at

 

This unit is relevant to workers who provide personal care to clients at night in all care settings - hospital, residential, day care or foster-care or in the client’s own home. 

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker must be able to:

 

  • Define Dementia, understand it’s aetiology

 

  • Be aware of 6 types of senile dementia and the associated symptoms
  • Identify 3 types of medication and recognize how behavior is affected
  • Understand the effect of ambience and mood
  • Identify key methods of approach (must be practical to your own environment)
  • Complete, in small groups, a case study
  • Complete a multiple choice audit

1.       For registered nurses who wish to incorporate this training into your PREP portfolio’s, you should carry out practice reflection and attach subsequent evidence from this training  

  1. Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for approximately 3 years
  2. A candidate assessment is available (Word 2000) for post training audit

Included in the session is theory based information that may involve a powerpoint presentation.

The key points to remember are:

1.   The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.

2.   Staff should not be expected to be on duty

3.   Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.

 

N.B  Registration details are kept by us for Seven years. It is important to register on the day.
