Summary

 

This workshop is aimed at care support workers who are involved with clients who suffer from seizures of an epileptic nature.

Who this unit is aimed at

 

This unit is relevant to workers who provide personal care to clients in all care settings - hospital, residential, day- or foster-care or in the client’s own home. 

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker must be able to:

 

  • Understand the main effects of epilepsy as experienced by the service user groups
  • Understand the importance of supporting service users to take medication as directed by their doctor.
  • Understand that service users may have unpredictable moods and behaviours from epilepsy

How many candidates may attend?

This training is not limited in numbers.

Content Summary

  • What Epilepsy is and how it is caused.
  • How to recognise at least three types of seizure and how they present.
  • Know how to safely care for someone having a seizure.
  • Know how to administer emergency rectal diazepam and be assessed as safe to do so.

 

 

·       What documentation is required following a seizure

Other relevant information 

1.       For registered nurses who wish to incorporate this training into your PREP portfolio’s, you should carry out practice reflection and attach subsequent evidence from this training  

  1. Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for approximately 3 years
  2. A candidate assessment is available (Word 2000) for post training audit

Included in the session is theory based information that may involve a powerpoint presentation.

The key points to remember are:

1.   The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.

2.   Staff should not be expected to be on duty

3.   Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.

 

 

N.B  Registration details are kept by us for Seven years. It is important to register on the day.
