Summary

This two hour introductory course is for workers in residential or community settings who wish to explore and develop an understanding of common medicines, dispensing techniques and polypharmacy when working with clients who suffer from mental impairments.

Who this unit is aimed at

This unit is relevant to workers who provide personal care to clients in all care settings - hospital, residential, day- or foster-care or in the client’s own home.

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker must be able to:

Understand the importance of supporting service users to take medication as directed by their doctor.

Understand why it is important for workers to follow policies and procedures.
Develop an overview of the most common medicines and their effects on the client
Develop confidence in recording and observation skills

Specific content

Key points in administering or assisting clients with medication in their own homes or in care homes
The responsibility of the carer
The legal implications associated with administering medication
Antipsychotics, Anxiolytics, Hypnotics, M.A.O.I Antidepressants, S.S.R.I Antidepressants , Tricyclic Antidepressants
Potential side effects of medication on the individual
Effective observation and reporting skills
Complete a multiple choice audit (All students)

1. For registered nurses who wish to incorporate this training into your PREP portfolio’s, you should carry out practice reflection and attach subsequent evidence from this training

Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for approximately 3 years
A candidate assessment is available (Word 2000) for post training audit
The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.
Staff should not be expected to be on duty
Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.
