Summary

 

The purpose of this session is to provide manual handling instruction for staff in compliance with the requirement laid down in the care Standards Act 2000 and the Health and Safety at work act (1974) And Manual handling operations (1992)

Who this unit is aimed at

 

This six hour unit is designed to be generally applicable across the whole of the sector, however, the programme may need to be adapted for Community care support workers who are lone working. This training is suitable for carers who have  dependant clients to care for.

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker must be able to:

 
  • Understand the basic structure and functions of the spine when moving and handling.
  • Be aware of the basic legislation that governs all moving and handling tasks.
  • Be aware of the meaning and purpose of risk assessment in relation to moving and handling.
  • Use safe moving and handling techniques.

How many candidates may attend?

This training is limited to 12 candidates. 

 

Specific content

Ÿ         Incidence of back injury in the care sector

Ÿ         Particular risks associated with home care or care homes 

Ÿ         Risk assessment and the importance of keeping documentation up to date - Why review risk assessment

Ÿ         Unsafe, condemned lifts i.e. Drag, Orthodox, Floor, Hands around neck and rationale behind the decision

Ÿ         The importance of pre planning client handling tasks

Ÿ         Handling of clients/inanimate loads (Differences) "TILE" or "LITE"

Ÿ         Using a hoist/ sling when transferring a client, bathing, toileting, lifting, Hoist / equipment check list  (where applicable)

Ÿ         Sitting clients in bed, repositioning client in bed, lying to sitting over edge of bed, clients pulls to sitting

Ÿ         Handling people in and out of vehicles, pushing a wheelchair

Ÿ         client falls in confined spaces, preventing injury to self and client

Ÿ         Risk factors-Posture, force, repetition, personal risk factors

Ÿ         How to keep in good shape

Ÿ         Common sense ergonomics- How can you make the job easier?

Ÿ         Emergency procedures

Ÿ         Use of "Booster cushions", monkey pole, bed blocks

 

 

 

 

 

 

Other relevant information 

1.       For registered nurses who wish to incorporate this training into your PREP portfolio’s, you should carry out practice reflection and attach subsequent  evidence from this training  

  1. Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for a maximum of 1 year
  2. A host certificate will also be issued for presentation on your Notice Board 
  3. A candidate assessment is available (Word 2000) for post training audit

 

 

Please note that as this is a practical workshop numbers are limited to 12 staff in registration.  

 

Summary:

The  6 hour study day will demonstrate current safe handling Techniques and allows staff present the opportunity to work and practice these under close supervision.  The use of on site and available handling aids should be included. In order to do this, a practise area must be made available as well as access to all on site handling aids. Included in the session is theory based information relating to Anatomy and Physiology of the back. This may involve a powerpoint presentation. The key points are:

 

1.   The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.

2.   Staff should not be expected to be on duty

3.   Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.

             4.  A practice area must be made available that is accessible for the staff to use during the training

5. Trainers can only demonstrate hoists on production of a valid 6 monthly test certificate as required by LOLER (Lifting operations lifting equipment Regulations). If there is no evidence that you hoist has been tested within the LOLER requirements, the trainer will request that you sign a declaration to exempt the trainer from liability in the event of an incident. Should you prefer not to sign the declaration, the trainer has the right to refuse to use the hoist in such circumstances.  

 

Special Requirements;

Please note that as this workshop involves practical demonstration staff should be aware that they should  wear flat shoes and practical clothing . You will need to make available all on site handling aids and equipment that you have available within your care environment and plan to work within a practice area. As with the training area, this should be quiet, undisturbed and large enough to accommodate those present.

 

Any staff who have suffered a back injury within the last 12 months must inform the trainer prior to the session.   

N.B

Registration details are kept by us for Seven years. It is important to register on the day. It is a legal requirement that this session will last a minimum of  6 hours. A true or false audit may be required.
