Summary

 

 

This is modular course carried out over 5 days and is designed to enable the candidate to become Competent as an adviser for Risk assessments (Generic and Moving and Handling) and a resource for Moving and Handling within your care setting, which Includes Training.

 

Who this unit is aimed at

 

 

Senior staff or managers who show ability in one or more of the following areas; Motivation and enthusiasm to cascade training, a genuine interest in safe practice and good organisational skills.   They must have a good knowledge of how your organisation works and a working knowledge of the Documentation in use.

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker will be able to:

 

 

·         Be a competent practitioner who will demonstrate “safe handling” techniques and be in a position to advise and train staff on an individual or small group basis within the workplace 

·         Complete Generic and Moving and Handling risk assessments 

·         Maintain records of handling equipment within their work area and ensure suitable equipment is in use to prevent injury to staff or your client group

·         Act as a resource in all matters of Risk Management and Moving and handling within the workplace

  • Satisfy the recommendations as detailed in the “Management of Health and Safety at Work act”  (1992) regulation 6(1) and “item 86” issued by the Health and Safety Commission (August 1998)     

How many candidates may attend?

 

This training is limited to 12 candidates.

·         Generic Risk Assessmentincluding  Health and Safety(Lone working where appropriate)

·         Moving and Handling Risk assessments – all staff, not confined to Care.

·         Client Assessments and Nursing Care Plans

·         The Legal Framework

·         Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Manual Handling Operations

·         Regulations 1992(2002)

·         Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992

·         R.I.D.D.O.R. COSHH

·         Anatomy and Physiology Of the Musculoskeletal System, Causes of Musculoskeletal Pain, Strain and Injury,

·         Introduction to Ergonomics, Workplace Ergonomic Profiles

·          Principles of Safe Handling of Clients and Inanimate Loads

·         The safe use of Moving and Handling equipment in the work place

·         Positioning the Client in Bed, Assisting Clients Into and Out of Bed

·         Assisting Clients to Stand From Sitting, Assisting Clients who use Wheelchairs

·         Repositioning Clients Whilst Seated, Assisting Clients While Walking

·         Assisting Clients who are Falling, Assisting Clients who have Fallen

·         Hoist Demonstration, Hoisting Clients from the Floor, Hoisting Clients from a Chair, Hoisting Clients into and out of Bed

·         Presentation of Workplace Risk Assessments

·         Devising a Training Programme for the  Workplace

·         Teaching a Safe Moving or  Handling Technique

·         Moving and Handling Case Studies discussed

·         Revision of Safe Handling Techniques and Use of Handling Aids

·         Short Teaching session to the group on a topic to be given by Course Consultant

 

N.B  There are Written and Presentation Expectations during the course (subsequently out of Hours research is expected).

The course also involves continuing evaluation, as well as individual project work which will be used to assess learner competence. 

 

Other relevant information 

  1. For registered nurses who wish to incorporate this training into your PREP portfolio’s, you should carry out practice reflection and attach subsequent evidence from this training  
  2. Certificates will be issued for successful candidates only, with action plans for those who have not met the criteria.  
  3. Annual one day refreshers should be undertaken to update the qualification.

  

Summary:

The course demonstrates current safe Moving and Handling Techniques and allows those present the opportunity to work and practice these under close supervision. The use of on site and available handling aids will be included. In order to do this, a practise area is made available as well as access to all on site handling aids.

1.   Candidates should not be expected to be on duty

2.       Candidates must attend for all five days and should remain for the entire length of each session.

3.       Candidates must complete the coursework as agreed with ODLQ Accreditation

 

Special Requirements;

Please note that days 3, 4 and 5 of the course may involve practical demonstration and sharing of ideas on Moving and handling. Candidates are asked to wear suitable shoes and practical clothing.

 

Any candidate who has suffered any back injury, operation or serious illness within the last 12 months must inform the trainer prior to the course commencement via declaration/Disclaimer which will be sent with confirmation details of the course.  .

 

N.B

Registration details are kept by us for Seven years. It is important to register on the day. It is a legal requirement that this session will last a minimum of 30 hours.
