Summary

 

This one day course is designed to enable you to maintain your qualification as an adviser for manual handling within your own workplace by carrying out an annual refresher.  

Who this unit is aimed at

Existing Qualified advisors in manual handling

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker must be able to:

 

·         Carry out “safe handling” advising with staff on an individual basis 

·         Complete complex manual handling risk assessments 

·         Maintain records of handling equipment within their area

·         Act as a resource in all matters of Manual handling within the workplace

  • Satisfy the recommendations as detailed in the “Management of Health and Safety at Work act”  (1992) regulation 6(1) and “item 86” issued by the Health and Safety Commission (August 1998)

How many candidates may attend?

This training is limited to 12 candidates.

·         Update to Manual Handling, Legislation. The Legal Framework

·         Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992

·         Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992, R.I.D.D.O.R.

·         Injury statistics

·         Individual problem solving scenarios

·         Risk Assessment, Client Assessments and Nursing Care Plans

·         Update to Handling Aids: Handling Belts, Select handling Slings, Transfer Boards, Turnplates, Slide Sheets

 

 

Other relevant information 

1.       For registered nurses who wish to incorporate this training into your PREP portfolio’s, you should carry out practice reflection and attach subsequent evidence from this training  

  1. Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for a maximum of 1 year
  2. A candidate assessment is required to show evidence of underpinning knowledge and competence.  

 

Summary:

The course demonstrates current safe handling Techniques and allows staff present the opportunity to work and practice these under close supervision. The use of on site and available handling aids will be included. In order to do this, a practise area is made available as well as access to all on site handling aids. Included in the session is theory based information relating to Anatomy and Physiology of the back. This may involve a powerpoint presentation. The key points are:

1.   Staff should not be expected to be on duty

2.       Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.

3.       Staff must complete the approved coursework

 

Special Requirements;

Please note that as this workshop involves practical demonstration staff should be aware that they should  wear flat shoes and practical clothing . Any staff who have suffered a back injury within the last 12 months must inform the trainer prior to the session.  You will be required to submit a declaration prior to attending this training.  

 

N.B

Registration details are kept by us for Seven years. It is important to register on the day. It is a legal requirement that this session will last a minimum of 6 hours.
