Summary

 

A half day course for workers in residential or community settings to explore and develop an understanding of how to deliver quality personal care and the principles of care planning. 

Who this unit is aimed at

 

This unit is relevant to workers who provide personal care to clients in all care settings - hospital, residential, day- or foster-care or in the client’s own home. 

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker must be able to:

 

  • Understand how to provide support with personal care.
  • Understand why it is important for workers to follow policies and procedures.
  • Develop confidence in recording and observation skills
  • Respond to the changing needs of service users.

How many candidates may attend?

This training is not limited in numbers.

Specific content

  • Bathing in bed/bathroom/chair to include aspects of personal hygiene.
  • Assistance with management of continence of bladder and bowel
  • Catheter Care (suprapubic and urinary)
  • Assistance with dressing and undressing, assistance with feeding
  • Ensuring a safe environment within the Clients Health & Safety Policy (Cross Infection, MRSA)
  • Hand Washing, Assistance with appliances (hearing aids, spectacles, artificial limbs, leg callipers)
  • Care of skin and hair, including assistance with shaving.
  • Care of pressure areas and prevention of sores. Care of mouth and teeth, including dentures.
  • Complete, in small groups, a case study (Where time allows)
  • Complete a multiple choice audit (All students)

 

Other relevant information 

1.       For registered nurses who wish to incorporate this training into your PREP portfolio’s, you should carry out practice reflection and attach subsequent evidence from this training  

  1. Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for approximately 3 years
  2. A candidate assessment is available (Word 2000) for post training audit
  3. The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.
  4. Staff should not be expected to be on duty
  5. Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.
  6. The use of a venue that has access to wash basins, beds, bathrooms etc is preferable but not essential.
