INCARE service’s award in Dementia Care is a distance learning course which has been written for people working with, or who want to work with, people with dementia.

Overview
This INCARE award allows learners to:

• Understand the different types of dementia
• Find out about the various symptoms and causes of dementia
• Gain a greater understanding of the different treatments available to people with dementia.

Learners do not need any previous experience of working with people with dementia to undertake this INCARE award.

This course includes a study guide which provides learners with the opportunity to meet the learning outcomes discussed below. Assessment involves completing a work book of questions regarding the information learnt. This is then forwarded to the learners tutor at INCARE services. The learner is expected to complete all of the questions to a level that shows clear understanding of the learning outcomes covered in the award.

The award is split into four Units.

Unit One - An introduction to Dementia
In this unit, the learner will learn about some of the common and rare types of dementia including Alzheimer’s disease, the fronto temporal dementias and the vascular dementias.
Learning Outcomes include:

• Definition of Dementia. • Common types of dementia.
	o Alzheimer’s disease. o The Vascular dementias. o Dementia with Lewy bodies.
• The rarer types of dementia Including
	o The fronto temporal dementias. o HIV Brain related impairment o CJD o Alcohol Related Dementia.
• Illness/ conditions linked to Dementia including:
	o Dementia in Parkinson’s disease. o Dementia associated with motor neurone disease. o Dementia in Huntington’s disease. o Down’s syndrome and risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Unit Two - Understanding the Brain
Unit Two will help learners to understand how the brain works and how the brain is divided into four main areas known as lobes.
The second part of this unit will look at why people with dementia use behaviours to express themselves.
Learning Outcomes include:

• Understanding the brain
• The Frontal lobe.
• The Temporal lobe.
• The Parietal Lobe
• The Occipital Lobe.
• The brain and behaviours
• Causes of behaviours.

Unit Three - Causes and Symptoms
This section aims to provide learners with an understanding of the different causes and symptoms of some of the different types of dementia looked at in the first unit.
Learning Outcomes include

• Causes of dementia
	o Genetic o Environmental o Psychological o Social factors o Head injury
• Symptoms. Examples include:
	o Changes in personality or behaviour o More forgetful of recent events o Speech problems o Less able to adapt to change
• Memory types:
	o Short term Memory o Long term memory o Emotional memory

Unit Four – Approaches and Treatments.
This final unit concentrates on the concept of person centred care and what is meant by the term the, ‘old culture of care’, the role of the anti dementia drugs and the recent decisions by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence regarding these drugs.

Finally, the third section of this unit explores some of the different types of treatment that are available for people with dementia including different types of therapies and support systems.

• Therapies, including:
	o Occupational Therapy. o Physiotherapy o Reminiscence therapy o Music & Dance Therapy o Aromatherapy o Reality orientation. o Validation Therapy.
• Support Systems, including:
	o The Alzheimer’s Society. o The Picks disease support group.
